Design in the context of Jordan may at first glance not be one of the most pressing problems for the country – but there are convincing arguments for a strong and sustained commitment to invest into the continuous build-up and strengthening of a “Jordan Design Culture”. Such a Design Culture is embedded into a society with many links to history, daily life, industrial production, handicraft and architecture, but is also linked to such diverse ideas as national identity, quality, trust in local products, and it is beyond those in permanent competition with virulent global forces, shaping the objects in our environment. Strengthening the ideas behind the concepts of Design in a broad sense will pay back to society on many levels.
Design Jordan Shareholders came to a conclusion that there is only a slight growth that has been made in the application and use of Industrial Design in Jordan industrial production. Professional experts on private and official levels are quite aware of this situation, and there is agreement that proper action should be taken to improve this situation.
A number of different institutions are involved in activities of Industrial Design, but a sound infrastructure is missing.
Among the identified deficits are:
Weak outreach to the public, low public awareness
Information deficits on the potentials and the value of design in industry
Deficits in the coordination of design related activities
The need for embedding Industrial Design into the cultural context of Jordan
Only few activities in Design Research
